A Day At The Beach
May 2, 2019
By the storytellers of the Huntington
She's playing with a flying saucer.
She's at the beach - Rye Beach.
She's in good condition.
She was a high jumper in high school.
You can see all the little tents. You can rent a tent.
It's June 21st - the official start of summer.
The year is 1960 'cause of the bathing suit.
It looks like she has sunglasses on.
She's a lady out of control.
She's Mary - she doesn't have her lamb with her.
She seems to be laughing - her mouth is open.
She's on the lam from leaving the office today.
Fred took the picture - Fred's her boyfriend.
They met at the Huntington - it was love at first sight.
The person who took the picture might be kneeling in the sand.
She's either laughing or she's worried.
Fred gave Mary the flying saucer for her birthday, which was yesterday.
Mary got her clothes at Macy's on sale.
Fred and Mary have been together 3 months.
It's warm but overcast. We don't see her shadow. It's 11:15 in the morning.
She's on a high.
Her boyfriend Fred threw the flying saucer.
She's very good at catching Frisbee - they play often.
That's how they met at a Frisbee competition.
Mary's happy, Fred's happy, everybody's happy.
First, they had breakfast: scrambled eggs, english muffin, coffee, orange juice.
Mary just moved in with Fred - they ate breakfast at the park.
Next, they went to work. Mary teaches a Weight Watchers program. She's the example of before.
Fred manages her money - he's very wealthy.
He's her bookkeeper too - Mary gives him a bunch of signed checks.
It was Mary's idea to go to the beach - she likes to go there.
They swim, they look for some junk food (hot dogs, potato chips, clams, Budweiser drinks). Mary paid for it.
They must rent those tents. There are several buses - there's a truck on the beach. That's not very usual.
They might go swimming, get sunburned (it looks overcast though).
Mary forgot her deodorant - she didn't hug him, he didn't hug her.
We hear the sounds of the waves, the ocean, somebody's radio, at least one baby crying, somebody wants to go home.
They might have friends.
Something got lost and they were looking for it.
We smell rotten fish, garbage, cigarettes, charcoal burner, the ocean, suntan lotion.
They go to Brown's seafood restaurant.
They could go to the movies, take a nap.
Maybe Fred proposes. Mary doesn't say anything: she's afraid and doesn't want to answer.
Fred works a little harder, then they wake up - was it all a dream?
They're gonna go to the beach again tomorrow 'cause they had so much fun.
The two of them quarrel the next day.
One goes to the beach without the other.
But they all live happily ever after.
