In a farmyard, at midmorning, Betsy is holding two chickens. They’re going to have them for dinner. She’s putting the chickens away for the night. Someone is standing just inside the barn door: a woman with light blond hair, Lila. Lila the farmer’s wife is counting chickens. They need to sell them, so they want to know how many they have. Lila and Betsy are mother and daughter. They hear chicken noises, and Betsy chuckling. They smell manure, hay, and milk. Betsy will grow up to be a farmer’s wife. She has a teenage brother who milks cows. Now he’s gathering eggs. Betsy also has a younger sister. She’s collecting eggs, too. Next they’ll go in to lunch. Betsy is getting close to nap time after working all day and she’s feeling drowsy.
