If you ask Gerald how old he is he will tell you, "This many!" and hold up four fingers. Gerald would like to be five so he can go to school. Gerald would really love to be ten, so he can be a big boy and ride a big boy bike. When you are ten you can sneak into the Tavern downtown where grownups drink beer and music plays on a jukebox. Also, there are sometimes fights. (Gerald's brother told him so).
Today though, Gerald is four and at home playing with his best friend, Ken. Ken is a frog, a very friendly frog who makes Gerald smile and laugh. They like to make a tent in Gerald's bedroom and peek out watching for Fair Maidens (like in the stories mom and dad read to him) to come along. Gerald will rescue the girls, (from dragons, giants and other bad stuff) Ken just wants a fair maiden to kiss him, he would like to be a Prince and has heard that is how it works.
This afternoon may be the lucky day the two have waited for, Gerald's friend from down the street, Sissy, is coming over to play! When Sissy arrives Ken introduces himself as Gerald's friend. Gerald slays two dragons and an ogre (which impresses Sissy) Then Ken musters his brave face and asks Sissy for a kiss. Gerald looks at Sissy, Sissy looks at Gerald AND Ken, then gives Ken a shy kiss, then another! There is a light tinkling sound, a rainbow a[[ears and KEN IS A PRINCE! Ken is so grateful that he stays on with Gerald, living in the tent in Gerald's room; who needs a Castle when you have good friends?
