A Summer Scene for Everybody

This is Sally and Rudy. They are running out of the water…..just the two of them. The other people are standing around watching.
Why just the two of them? Maybe it’s a race. Sally and Rudy are racing and the crowd is watching.
It must be a race. They have bracelets on their ankles. They are carrying something – a baton. It must be a relay race. Perhaps they will hand the baton over to the next group for the next leg of the race.
It is a pretty day – a nice day to be on the beach. After they hand off the relay they will sit down in the sand and build a sand castle. If they are going to build a sand castle they will need to stay close to the water. Then they will be able to stay cool.
There are a lot of people there. These two people aren’t in sync with the other people. What are they doing something different than the crowd?
They are having a race and the man is ahead. All of these people are here to cheer them on.
How hot it must be! How hot the sand must be! The water might be cold.
This looks like a lake. Maybe it’s a family camp…. There are too many people. Sometimes there are a lot of people at family camp. Things are planned to draw crowds. The people all come together for the event. There are big events planned for holidays.
These three people look like they are in a race. They are running but they are not people who have trained. They are not part of the crowd.
There may be a shark in the water and the swimmers are trying to get away from it…..or maybe jelly fish. The others are just watching.
The race could be a triathlon. It’s running, swimming and biking. Triathlons are big events. That’s why there are a lot of people watching.
Jan R.’s done marathons. It was fun. You have to really practice. It was worth it. The whole family had a great time.
This is at the sea. There is a lot of sand. Too much for a lake, where the sand must be trucked in.
Lynn was a scout master. He went on the water with the scouts, but not the sea or the lake. He went canoeing. They swam a bit but Lynn swam out of necessity not for recreation. You need to swim to go canoeing. He would do training exercises where they would flip the canoe and restore it. Lynn did like to sail. He had a sail boat and sailed on Lake Monroe. If the wind gets too strong, the boat may capsize. Lynn capsized once – to avoid a collision. The boat was laying on its side. They righted it and went on. No harm done.
Jane was a diver at the pool – just from the side, not from the high dive. She liked to swim. It is a nice feeling, being in the water.
Jan R., Mary Lou, Stella, Tonia and Jan like to go to the beach. Lynn likes to go to a State Park – Spring Mill – and just walk around and look at the historic buildings. Tonia likes to go to McCormick’s Creek and see the waterfalls. Bill doesn’t like to go into the water, but he likes to move on the beach. Marcia doesn’t like to go out. She enjoys doing something where the event is brought in: fun stuff, but not great big stuff.
This makes Tonia think of the Polar Plunge on New Years, even though it’s a different time of the year. It reminds her of the Polar Plunge because the people jump into the water and run out…….and people watch. We do crazy things sometimes!
