The man is getting a shoe shine, he’s running for office and he has a heavy date. The people are walking at the Paddock mall or in a train station. He is smoking a pipe in a dress suit and he went shopping. This is taking place in the morning, in the wintertime, in October and is outside were it is about 30 degrees with the ground wet in 1960 or 1962. He is shivering and these men don’t know each other, he just stopped for a shine. The man with the pipe is not paying attention to the shine. There is a theater and you can hear footsteps.
He had a bad day at the horse track and told his wife he was out shopping. You can smell pipe tobacco, shoe polish and 2 men. He is trying to think of what to tell his wife. He’s thinking about a job, going to a movie or divorce court. Someone here is lost. He may be a traveling salesman. These men have seen each other before; they are from Chicago, California, airlines or New York.
He is warning the man about someone watching him. He may change to a cigar. After this his wife wants a divorce. He will have to get money for a shine. He doesn’t know what to do, depressed and looking for money. The divorce could be off.
