This story takes place during the late 50s, you can tell by the shoes, and the women are posed behind the curtain at the local theater. As they stand behind the red curtain, they are feeling nervous because opening night for their new musical "The Long Goodbye" is just two days away. They really want to make sure the timing for the third act is just right.
The musical is about a group of housewives during WWII who are coping with having their husbands gone due to the conflict. And the third act is particularly important because not all of the husbands make it home. Since many of the women remember the war from 15 years ago, they feel this is really close to home. The songs in the third act are ballads that focus on how the women and their husbands have changed. They sing about how they wonder if things will go back to the way things were before the war. They are unsure of how it will be now.
The women know the audience. They are from the same small town. And they know a military contingent from the surrounding town will also be in attendance. In addition to being nervous, they are looking forward to grabbing drinks after the rehearsal. The woman have grown incredibly close during rehearsals. They have shared their anxiety about the Cold War and Korean War and wonder about what has really changed since WWII. They are glad to have each other and the musical. It provides an escape from the humdrum routine of their lives.
Fast forward to opening night. It goes really well. Reviews make it to the upper eschalon of the military and the ladies are asked to perform at the WWII Commemoration Award Dinner in Washington D.C.
They go and perform and have a great time. None of them had been to D.C. before and they liked the big city lights. They went dancing, to the clubs, and ate the food. Everything was so different from their town. But after their weekend performance, they
