Maggie and Sadie are cousins. Maggie is from the city and Sadie is the country cousin. They are taking Maggie's new car to Chicago to see old Aunt Carrie. They shopped special at Brandeis in Omaha for the trip. They got fancy furs and hats to go out to a show.
Carrie is a teacher and she lives alone in a small apartment. She also teaches violin and she plays the banjo. At night the girls go out onto the cold streets lit by lanterns to see a vaudeville show. Carrie plays the banjo for the silly show. There are no dancing girls, that would make the girls nervous. There is a clown and some circus performers.
After the show they take a horse and carriage to Carrie's friend Minnie's house where they have tea, bisquits, sweet cookies and mincemeat pie.
The next day Maggie and Sadie go out shopping and to the new art museum. They both love it because they both are painters. They love the famous Rembrandt and they spend all day looking at pictures and getting ideas. They each take something from the gift shop for family back home.
Later Maggie gets married. But Sadie did not get married. She paints horses and gets famous. Her paintings are now in the museum in Chicago.
