Brave Woman: First to Fly an Airplane
Maureen Jean Wilson. She's takin' a ride in her airplane. 1950.
She's afraid because the plane is open. She could fall out. She fears animals in front of her, pretty much any kind of animal that is on an open field.
She is the first woman to be riding in an airplane. She's proud. Scared, I guess. I wouldn't think she has a lot of experience.
It IS scary, an open plane.
She has parents for sure. Her parents have a ranch so she can fly. She has no children. She has a husband, John, who is in the service. Probably a lieutenant in the Air Force.
What's that on her legs? A cast or something. She probably fell and broke her leg five or six years ago. She broke it learning how to fly an airplane. It's easy to do!
Her family is proud of her. Her husband encourages her. Her family is not with her today. She went to the airport to fly that type of plane.
Her final destination? St. Louis! To meet her husband.
She wants to be known for flying that airplane.
"I'm going to take off! I'm going to take of to tell the world, and the women, to take a ride!"
