Alice comes from northern Wisconsin. "She is out collecting eggs and doing her chicken chores" says Mary. She has her apron full and must be careful not to drop them because her mother is making angel food cake with them. "The angel food cake is for Alice's 9th birthday" adds Sharon.
Cluckie, the chicken, is looking for her eggs that Alice gathered. We can hear the birds singing while the hen, Cluckie is cackling. "It is late in the fall and Alice is wearing her beautiful brown long stockings" states Shirley. Her mother warned her about the chickens pecking her legs and the snakes hiding in the grass.
Alice has a large family, consisting of her mom and dad, five brothers and 4 sisters. Everyone has chores to do. The girls must take turns doing the dishes, setting and clearing the table, cleaning the house, making the beds and of course gathering the chicken eggs. The boys are responsible for the outdoor chores; gathering wood for the wood stove, milking the cows, doing the field crops, weeding the garden, haying, cleaning the barn and hauling out the manure.
Alice is learning a lot of responsibilities to someday grow up and be a housewife and mother herself.
