DISASTER!
It is the first Saturday in September and the many colored leaves have begun to fall from the trees in the family yard. Mom and Dad have finally finished raking all of the autumn leaves into a huge pile. They have warned brothers, Peter and Butch to stay away from the pile, it will be picked up later. Mom and Dad have gone inside to cool down after all the raking, the two boys stand, staring at the giant pile of leaves, Butch, who is three years old can almost feel his big brother, Peter itching to run and jump into that pile. Peter is eight, so he knows better than to go against his parents rule. It is SO tempting though!
Butch gently kicks at a corner of the pile with his tennis shoe toe, "I can hear it crinkle," Butch says.
"It looks so soft," Peter whispers.
"I dare you," from Butch.
"I will if you will," replies Peter to his little brother.
Butch pauses, lost in thought. "You first," he tells Peter.
Peter backs up, takes a big breath and runs, full speed at the glorious pile of crisp fall leaves. He leaps, flies for a moment and plops face first into the pile of color. What a wonderful feeling as leaves fly everywhere, small insects scattering Peter rolls over, a satisfied smile on his face and spies his little brother racing into the house yelling, "Mom, Dad, Peter jumped onto the leaves!"
"Butch, you brat, it was your idea!" Peter yells after his younger brother. Peter has been tricked by little Butch.
Butch was devious enough to think he could get Peter sent to bed without supper and dessert, the usual punishment for breaking rules. Butch LOVES dessert, he thinks it is the perfect plan. His plan works-but only to a point. Butch sits at the table with Peters plate and his own. Butch cleverly feeds his and Peters food to the dog who always waits under the table, hoping for scraps. Pumpkinhead; the dog is happy to oblige. Uh oh, Mom sees what Butch is up to! Well, so much for two desserts-now Butch has no dessert and the dog enjoyed two dinners. Both brothers are paying for the jump into the raked leaves.
