It was my 66 birthday in the Galapagos Islands when for the first time in my life I was able to see the diverse varieties of fish in the warm shallow water. I sang Happy Birthday to myself as I moved gently through the water discovering fish like the boxfish, that I never even knew existed.
The sea lions were nearby so I kept an eye out. They were friendly, but I didn't want to run into one.
The water was calm here and the only thing I could hear was the sound of my breathing. I was new to snorkelling, so I had to make sure I didn't get too excited and turn my head to water leaked into the snorkel.
Time seemed to catch up to me. As a young girl I had watched Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges on TV every day after school. When I was in biology at University I studied undersea animals. This was the first time I was able to see for myself and experience the underwater world. It is never too late to experience new and meaningful places, they are everywhere I turn, especially here in the shallow water on the Island of San Cristobal.
