Early Aviation: The Homecoming – First woman aviator, Braver than Brave
Facilitated by Doreen Vanderstoop, Alison Cada
This woman’s name is Shirley McLean
She's probably in her early 20's
She’s flying an airplane
It’s still on the ground
I don’t think she’s moving
I think the airplane is standing still This contraption is very basic and rickety
It’s a biplane
Definitely one of those early ones
She’s the pilot
She looks very confident
Maybe has a bit of nervousness
She wears shin guards
Because of the wheat stocks might slap against her ankles
She doesn’t have a guard for that, so she needs those when she’s landing
The wind can be pretty sharp up there
She looks confident and that she could be a real pilot
She knows she’s a real pilot
There is a ball tournament in the background, and this is an added attraction
There is a smell of benzene in the background
The hamburgers roasting is taking over the bad smells
The smell is making her hungry
There is also the smell of popcorn Frankfurters or hotdogs as well
It looks cloudy outside
Maybe overcast
She looks quite proud to be there
She is also very excited
She even has an, “I told you so” attitude
I think she lives on a farm and she set out runways so she can make practice runs
She was going to go back home after this picture was taken
There is a good possibility that there is some family at her big appearance
Her siblings and her parents are there.
They made their way to the event either by an old jalopy, wagon, or horseback.
Her family are very proud of her
People are there for the ball tournament and also to see her
She may have been advertised to be there “Come and see the female aviatrix” in her rickety biplane
The people cheered when she flew in
It looks like she has something to hold her in place
And she has gauntlets on
