Emmy is on a farm in Iowa. She comes from a big family there are nine kids and eight of them are boys. She is gathering eggs from the hens. She has to hold the hen's head down with a board while she takes the eggs because she will get pecked and it hurts. Roosters chase Emmy and they are mean. Emmy puts the eggs into a container to take to town. She will go with her parents Lydia and Fred in the Model A to sell the eggs at the hatchery or at Mrs. Wilson's store. When she gets back she has to work in the garden where she grows peas, beans, sweet corn and radishes.
Emmy had a cat "Tiger" who had five kittens but she hid those kittens so the boys wouldn't hurt them.
Emmy would get a box and gather corn cobs for the cook stove. She and her brother Calvin would lick the cake bowl. Her mother would draw a line down the middle of the bowl through the batter and they each had to stay on their own side.
Emmy had to wear heavy hose with wide rubber garters tied around them when she helped with laundry on Monday. The washing machine was a gasoline Maytag and boy was it noisy. Rumble grumble was the noise. Rumble Grumble. She had to be careful to not get caught in the wringer. Some times the clothes would freeze on the line.
Supper was leftovers from dinner and every meal had lots of potatoes and eggs. Emmy didn't have to cook but she had to clean up. That night she could listen to the radio.
Monday night she would snuggle into sweet smelling sheets.
