Escape in the Afternoon
He’s like my husband, always picking the little ones!
It’s in San Souci, one street away from the water, on the beach.
He’s crossing a river. He’ll have to be careful. It’s very slippery. He needs to be cautious. It’s a wide river, a lake.
It’s afternoon to early evening. It’s winter, he has a coat on. It’s only ankle deep. He’s going to the fish shop for some dinner, across the other side. He’s watching where he’s stepping and he’s carrying a bag. There’s money in the bag and his lunch. Maybe he’s a thief running away. He has to hurry up before the tide comes in. His name is John Harry. He’s apprehensive. He doesn’t want to fall off the rocks. There are big spaces between the rocks. He’s very careful looking down at his feet. We hear the water running, the rippling, birds in the bushes, dogs barking. Maybe someone’s chasing him.
He’s robbed the bank. That’s why he’s running away. How courageous. Someone sings out “Hey” and he loses his footing. The police are waiting on the other side of the bank. No more escape. He’s arrested. He lost the money. No fish for dinner. His efforts were in vain.
