Jenny and Olma are cousins from Iowa. The uncles, aunts, brothers and sisters meet at Glenwood Park on a hill by the lake.
Maggie comes from Illinois, and Aunt Zonie from Perciville. Gerald and Dixie come all the way from California where they have an apple orchard. They bring two kids in the car. There are two sets of twins in the family Ken and Fred and Len and Lowell. It is a happy family.
The food is potluck. Gerald and Dixie brought store bought pie, but the rest is homemade. Apple, cherry and mincemeat, homecanned pumpkin, chocolate.
Fried chicken, ham, sweet potatoes, meatloaf, potato salad and home baked bread.
They drink fresh lemonade and ice tea out of big stone jars with a big chunk of ice to keep it cold. They drink from tin cups.
The young people walk around the lake courting.
The men play horseshoes, the girls wing, the women remember when. The men talk of hunting, their first car, fishing horses and mules.
It is Lula's birthday. Singing, "Happy Birthday to Lula..."
Boys are playing ball. Ralph brought a guitar. Singing, "She'll be coming round the mountain..." and "Old Susanna..."
Couples dance on the gazebo dance floor.
Later, the kids are tired in the back seat and the mother says, "Be Quiet."
At home the little ones are carried into the house asleep.
