In this picture the ladies are outdoors preparing food. They are at a picnic ground in Elliot Park. There are about 20 people that we see, but really 50 or 60 altogether.
This is a family picnic - a family reunion.
It is the Marshall family and they have come from Georgia, Ohio, Idaho, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is Saturday on a pretty fall day.
The family gets together at least once a year - sometimes twice.
The Marshall family has been doing this for a long time.
We see children eating ice cream cones while the women cut up cakes and pies. They are grilling and we see a kettle of lima beans, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, and deviled eggs. While the women set out food, the men sit and talk about politics. The children run around chasing one another.
If we close our eyes, we can smell the food being grilled and the aroma of coffee.
We can hear birds chirping and the sound of voices.
The mothers warn the children,"Be careful. Watch out for snakes!"
One ornery boy gets the idea of picking up a snake and putting it down the back of one of the girl's dresses.
The ladies are concerned about food poisoning and hurry up and put the food back in coolers when everyone is done eating. Then the women relax and talk about fashion, their homes, work, and gardening.
After everyone has had time to digest their food, someone says,"Let's cut the watermelon." And everyone digs in. The men and kids line up to see who can spit the seeds the furtherest!
At the end of the day they pack to go home. There are long hugs and goodfbyes at the car.
"We'll see you the same time next year."
