It’s a picnic at a park and they’re having a bake sale. Maybe it’s for a political convention. No, if it were political there would be bottles of booze. It must be a family celebration or a reunion. Maybe it’s also a birthday party.
The party is in a park pavilion, by a lake. It’s Lake Manawa! Or maybe in Minnesota somewhere. No, there’s too many people for Minnesota; it’s too cold up there to be outside. This must be Lake Manawa in Council Bluffs.
These ladies are named Jane and Nellie, “The Ladies of Saint Martha’s.” They know each other through “Ladies Aid” and a church group. They’re neighbors too.
In the background, people are standing in line getting ready for a feast. They’re about to serve the food. You can hear the children bickering and talking back and forth. They’re trying to get the ladies’ attention. Lots of people are talking in the background. Birds are chirping.
Jane and Nellie are happy to serve the food. They’re happy to see each other – it’s been a long time. This picnic is full of good food! Everybody probably brought something- it’s a potluck. They did a pretty good job. There are pies and cakes, spaghetti, cheesecake and brownies, and fudge-striped cookies. It’s all home-cooked, and tastes scrumptious!
After dinner, there will be horseshoe games, activities, outdoor games, hopscotch and curling. Then a fight will break out and they will all go home.
