There is a man named Stanley, who is sitting down. He is wiping the sweat off of his neck and chin. It's getting hotter, and he's thinking of going for a walk so that he can find a place to sit that is cooler. He had been reading the comics, but it got so hot in the sunshine on the bench he's sitting at that he's using the paper for a fan.
Stanley is sitting in front of the grocery, and there are some ads in the window. He thinks he needs to get out of the sun. He is thinking of going into the store. It would be cooler inside. There would be fans in the store. There would also be a food case with fresh meat on ice. The only problem is that Stanley isn't going to buy anything, so the manager doesn't want him loitering in the building.
Stanley decided he would walk down to the pool hall. It wouldn't be so bright, and there would be fans going to keep things cool. He could get a soda there for 10 cents. He could also get a beer. I bet that souded good when he was so hot. Stanley wouldn't have minded if someone threw water in his face. It would have been better than a beer.
As Stanley walked sown the street he looked around to see what was going on. He said good morning to the other people he saw. There were a lot of people out walking and biking. Most of them were looking for shade. Some were walking to the bus. They had to get to work.
Stanley had retired, and had no where he had to be, but he didn't want to sit at home all day. He has friends at the pool hall who he will visit with. They are retired too. Stanley has known them for a long time. They usually start out talkiing about the weather. Then they talk about other people they know, their families, and who has died. If any of them are farmers they talk about their crops, too.
Even though it is hot, Stanley usually has a pretty good day.
