Ice and Apples to Come
It is taking place on the grounds and its snowed. It’s winter and its cold. The sky is clear and nice. The man’s name is Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam’s wife’s name is Ruth, just like Joyce’s mom His dog’s name is Chipper Arf Arf. Uncle Sam is trying to feed the dog, who is looking down the way at another dog.
There are more people back by the trees. There’s someone bent over who is wearing the same little shoes. His name is Bumper. Uncle Sam and Chipper are walking, and they are going to bump Bumper; that’s why he’s called Bumper. They met each other and continued on. They are staying on the grounds and looking over.
They are going to a cabin with trees around it. Its an orchard with oranges and apples, and ice cream in the summer. The tree grows whatever ice cream you want. After their walk, Uncle Sam and Chipper are going to sing a song: East Side/ West Side
East Side, West Side
All around the town,
The tots sing Ring around Rosie, London Bridge is falling down.
Boys and girls together, me and Mamie O’Rourke,
Tripped the light fantastic on the sidewalks of New York.
Bumper went ice skating. He skittled a bit and might fall. It is morning and then it gets dark but not too dark. It seems like they are not near home, so they are going to stay in the cabin with a fire, in the fireplace to stay warm. They will sing, and snuggle and pet the dog, and read, and have hot chocolate with marshmallows. They all sit around the fireplace and talk about what they will do the next day.
There is a banjo in the bedroom of the cabin, they always bring a banjo. If it’s dark someone always has a banjo. They come together with a few bits and pieces and that’s how they end the story.
