It was a beautiful summer day and little Joe was excited to go to the ocean with his dad. Joe loved the crashing of the waves and listening to the seagulls argue about everything. He also loved the smell of the saltwater and seaweed mixed together with the scent of dead crabs. Dad didn't like that smell but it was the smell of the ocean to little Joe. The shore was crowded with smiling, laughing people on this sunny afternoon; dad waded right in with Joe tucked under his arm. Dad was a really good swimmer, Joe hoped that someday he would be as great a swimmer as his dad. Joe was sure his dad was the best swimmer in the whole world.
Jor was looking at all of the people out in the ocean and at the waves dancing around his toes as dad carried him in. Suddenly Joe noticed tiny creatures bobbing up to the surface of the ocean! Joe tugs on dad's arm to get his attention. Dad looks down and he sees the creatures too. At first, dad tosses Joe up in the air to get him away from the little creatures. Joe comes down and he is studying the creatures, they look friendly, but dad tosses Joe up again to keep him away from the tiny beings. Joe is smiling because it is such fun to be tossed up AND he likes the little animals, or whatever they are.
Dad finally looks more closely at the creatures and realizes that they are friendly. Dad lets Joe float while he holds onto him and the tiny creatures tell Joe that they have come up from the deep bottom of the sea to make friends with whatever species is above. Joe and dad learn that the creatures used to come up to the top a lot, but some people were scared of them. They ask Joe and dad to take them home if they have water for them to live in. They do have a pool and proceed to try to catch as many of the bobbing creatures as they can.
Dad and Joe take many of them home and dad and the undersea creatures teach little Joe how to swim, Joe teaches the sea creatures about little children and human families. Joe's favorite little creature is bright green and it always says, "I'm home!" when Joe comes to the pool to visit.
