“IT’S NOT OVER YET!”
Those were the words that the crowd heard from Mary as the bright pink disk flew high, high, high into the air. It is a wonderfully warm July day at the Oregon beach. Today is the annual Frisbee contest and Mary has entered with her sister, Sally Sue and her boyfriend, Elvis. The crowd is cheering wildly; everyone is amazed that Mary has made it into the final heat, she has left all those teens and other young adults weeping in the sand. Mary has lived at the beach her entire life. Mary has legs like a human jumping bean, muscles galore. Mary could have been a champion at beach volleyball or any sport at all, but Frisbee is her lifelong love. That and Elvis, who Mary can hear singing HOUND DOG over the crash of the waves and the cheers of the crowd. Mary is so excited, she KNOWS she will be the winner, she has been dreaming of it forever. (well, since last July when she came in second) Mary hears Elvis sing out, "You ain't nothin' but a hound DOG!" and sees Sally Sue wind up to toss the Frisbee. It will be a long toss, difficult while racing through the waves, hand in hand with Elvis. This is NOT an easy competition! At the last second, Sally Sue and Elvis do the trade off they have been practicing, Elvis lets fly the pink disc that matches his swim cap. The pink disc looks like a flying saucer as it lashes across the pounding waves, higher and higher it flies. The crowd gasps, "It's too high," "She'll never be able to catch that!" "All over now..." Mary hears from the disappointed crowd. But Mary has been training forever, just for this moment. Mary spies the pink saucer against the bright sun, the white sand beneath her feet is further and further away as Mary wills her legs to jump higher than they have ever carried her before. MARY HAS DONE IT, SHE CATCHES THE FRISBEE. Not only that, she comes down to the sand as though she is on invisible angel wings. Mary's prize? A big hug and kiss from Elvis AND a Pina Colada, hey, that was a thirsty jump!
