This is the story of Whitney Heather. It's the first day of October, the beginning of fall. It must be a hot day by the way she's dressed. It started out cold but she's put her jacket aside now.
Leaves cover the bench and the ground all around her. She's in her East Bay backyard, in her typical East Bay clothes.
She's dressed up and fully made up, entrenched in high heels. Not your usual dress for sitting in your backyard. That's because this is just a moment of rest as the sun goes down. The last moment before she straps on the guitar strap and goes out to do a solo.
She's intense, thinking about her big performance. But she's seasoned and relaxed, too, comfortable with performing. American Idol is coming through Oakland for the East Bay Oktoberfest and this is her big break. She'll play and sing, "Lady Sings the Blues."
Now she's at Henry J Kaiser Auditorium. She steps out on stage. This is big - she may never get such a good chance. It could take her a lot of places. It's overwhelming but she's focused.
Whitney's song is very sultry - her alto voice rings out. Next she sings a Beatles song about "coming together right now." She sings it "NDRE style" mixed with a touch of Diana Ross's sound. Her guitar designs with the white ladies on it is custom-made, and works well for mixed audiences.
The crowd goes wild. They love her. The judges agree. She's on to the next round! Later that night, she sits in contemplation. What song will she sing for the next round?
