Peter plays his fiddle for tips, folks call him LUCKY, but he doesn't feel lucky today. The cafe is locked up tight. He can smell the soups cooking inside, he hears his stomach rumbling. Lucky has been shooing away stray dogs that also smell the soups and stews away from where he is trying to play. "Scat! Get Away from here!" he kicks at them with his foot. Lucky just needs to make some money.
His son, who Lucky calls TROUBLE is singing along with his dad today. Trouble has been reading the sign in the cafe window: Soups, Stews AND FRESHLY BAKED BREAD. Yum! It also mentions cakes and cookies. These sound great to a hungry kid. Trouble would like to be anywhere else, he does NOT like singing with dad. Trouble does like to eat though, so he is singing his heart out, while dreaming of being anywhere but here..
People passing by the cafe hear the music and are enjoying it. Lucky is hoping they will leave enough in tips for a good meal for himself and Trouble. Maybe even enough for a room somewhere, so he won't need to sleep on the stoop outside of the cafe again. It is winter now, so it does get really cold at night.
Lucky and Trouble look in the antique store by the cafe and dream about the diver's suit in the window. Maybe Trouble will be a deep sea diver one day, but, as long as he gets a good meal, Trouble will be satisfied for today.
