Mary Ann is hiding behind the old barn door.
She’s a stubborn little girl.
She’s 4 years old.
She wears her hair in a braid, upside down.
Her apron is folded up
With corn for the chicken.
“Now, it’s my turn to get this for Daddy.”
We’ll take it home to eat.
The chicken thinks she will eat him.
He’s ready to fly away.
But he’s not afraid anymore,
All the chickens chase her.
The rooster is the big boss on the farm.
There are also dogs and a pig.
Pigs like corn too.
They wiggle their noses, snorting.
Mary Ann has to go to school.
She’d rather stay home and chase the chickens
And the ducks and the wild geese.
