This happened in a South Carolina county in May 1961. In morning hours just after dawn, Mr. Perdue walked with his chickens, roosters, and small hens, feeding them. He wore a straw, wide-brim hat. He always walked his birds to keep them healthy, fat and get them back to their pen before dark.
You see, Mr. Perdue was a good farmer because he had grew up on the farm. He had a wife and two kids, a son and daughter. Mr. Perdue always had dreams that he would raise a family on the farm and did just that.
When walking his chickens Mr. Perdue invited those which jumped down from the trees to walk, too, and be fed. Free they were. He enjoyed nothing more than to walk with them and watch his hens, roosters, even small biddie chicks to eat and get fat, full size.
Happily feeding his chickens and walking them, Mr. Perdue led his birds back to their pen. As time passed the chickens were big. They were ready for Mr. Perdue and his family to kill and eat them.
