During the fall of 1982 a young girl named Lizzy who had recently graduated from high school set out on her own adventure of life.So she thought. She was fortunate enough to be accepted into one of the most prestigeous colleges in America, Harvard University. Her parents had decided that she should go into the school of law because her father was an outstanding lawyer, and her mother worked for the circuit court judge. The political side of the world is all Lizzy has ever known. Her parents have decided to choose her career, and they are paying an outstanding amount of money to make sure it happens. Although, Lizzy has always had dreams of playing music on the stages of Nashville, TN. She has come to accept that this is her fate, and this will make her parents happier than anything in the world.
Everyday at this college she gets up, goes to class and feels absolutely nothing. She feels emotionaly drained because she has no passion for law. But every night, she drags out her guitar and sits on the sidewalks of campus and sings and plays to her hearts content. Its these moments that she feels most at peace within her self. She has the greatest passion for what she is doing just at this moment with a guitar in hand and people to sing to. Every night she notices as soon as she starts playing a crowd begins to form around her, and every night she notices that people are waiting for her on the sidewalk to play. After she plays, the crowd cheers for more and leave money inside her guitar case.
Over the remainder of the semester this becomes her nightly routine. She plays and sings to ease the sting of how much she hates college and what she is studying. Over the course of 5 months, she raises over $5,000 just from singing and playing on the sidewalk of campus. She safely puts her money into the bank and is thankful for what she receives. During the Christmas break, she realizes that she is miserable and that this will not change unless she is pursuing a music career. She tells her parents that sadly Harvard is not the place for her and that she is leaving town and headed for Nashville. She tells them that she is going to enroll at Lipscomb University which is one of the leading schools in the music industries. Her parents were furious and told her that if she completed this decision she would be cut of from any further financial assistance. She heads back to Harvard startled by the shock of the unsupportive decisions her parents left her. She believes that music is the path of her life, and pursues her dream anyways.
She takes the money she had saved from singing, purchases a bus ticket and heads out to Nashville. She has never felt the wave of excitement that she feels at this exact moment in her life. Once she arrives in downtown Nashville, the sights and sounds fill her soul. She feels like she is home. She enrolls at Lipscomb university and begins classes for the spring semester. She loves each class, the smell of the books, how the pencil feels in her hand. She loves this place, and loves what she is studying. She is completely happy with her choice.
Lizzy walks the streets of Nashville, guitar in tow, just as she did at Harvard and plays and sings the same way. Except, the passion that drives her is different. Her music is stronger, her voice is stronger and people are magnatized to her. One night, the manager of Tootsies Orchid Lounge hears her playing and singing and is marveled by what he hears. He invites her to play on stage and will pay her $300 for each set she plays.
The summer begins and she decides to stay in Nasvhille instead of going home to Massachussetts. Hank Williams Jr. kicks the Nasvhille Summer Concert off in 1983. Lizzy is singing the exact same night of the concert and Hank hears her as he walks into Tootsies. After her set, Hank Williams Jr. invites her to open for him for the rest of his tour.
Lizzy is able to experience the sights of America across the eastern seaboard, to the mountains of the Carolinas. Once the tour ends, she returns to Nasvhille, and Columbia records, and several more offer her record contracts. Lizzy Belmont becomes a household name in the country music industry. Her family finally accepts her dream of becoming a countrymusic star and embraces her dream realizing they should have to begin with. Lizzy's story can inspire all of us to always follow your heart.
