Nifty Swifty: It was Tom’s Time!
This is a picture of Tommy Swift, taken by his mom when he won the grand prize at the Airplane Flying Competition. At the time of this picture Tom was about eight years old or less. Tom loved flying because his father flew a plane (even though he didn’t a license). Tommy is almost always pretending to be a pilot. He has also thought about being an aircraft designer.
When he practiced with his airplanes in the house, his mom would tell him not to hit the lamps or furniture. His dad would push him to let go and let it sail! Tom was always holding the plane high, so his brothers and sisters didn’t get hold of it.
Tom Swift was in a BIG airplane competition which was held downtown Minneapolis at US Bank Stadium where the Viking Football Team usually plays. It’s a really big place with lots of space to fly planes. The stadium windows were covered with curtains to keep the light out of the eyes of the pilots. Lots of other kids were there with their brothers, sisters, parents and grandparents. The grandparents and parents were taking lots of pictures.
The competition was judged by special representatives from Boeing, Air France, the Boy Scouts and featured the Medium Brothers (not the Wright or wrong brothers!), and even Vladimir Putin showed up! The judges were grading the competitors on distance, creativity od design, and hang time of their planes. Tom’s dad was yelling for him to “Let it Go! Let it Fly!” If you win in all the categories, you could get a scholarship to MIT. Tom did excellently in everything.
At the end, Tom’s mom asked him to hold up his prize-winning plane so she could take this prize-winning photo! ###
