Four mice live in Mouseburg in a house together. From left to right, their names are Patrice, Ernest, Celestine, and Corbusier. Mouseburg is similar to a quaint French village on the seaside. They are one family, and on this bleak Sunday morning, they are all getting ready for the day. They have multiple bathrooms in their house, but this is the only one they use; the rest are for guests only. It is very noisy as Patrice blow-drys her hair, Ernest flips the pages of his newspaper, and Celestine and Corbusier splash around in the bathtub. They are all getting ready to take a picnic to take advantage of the weather that all (except for Patrice) think is rather quite lovely. It's not bleak as in rainy and cold, but bleak as in an overcast fall day by the seaside. The kids are very excited about the picnic, as they have been told by Patrice that they will be eating the finest of cheeses! Everyone thinks Ernest doesn't care too much about the day, but inside he is very excited about the day ahead.
