It is the summer of 1953 in New York. The air is chilly, and there is a very special Teddy bear that was accidentally thrown into the trash pile at the curb in front of the home of a very sad little three-year-old boy named Benji.
It smells like garbage, turpentine, and a minefield in this trash pile, and it is definitely not a place for such a special Teddy bear.
It is garbage day, and before long, the garbage truck will be coming to pick the pile up. But a six-year-old girl comes along, and sees the bear. She has seen Benji walking around the neighborhood with the bear many times. So, she rescues the bear, takes it home, and washes it in shampoo, soap and water. Then, she goes back to Benji's house and knocks on the door. When she presents the nice clean bear to Benji, he is the happiest boy on the block!
