Mac is the shoe shine man and he is asking the man a question. The man having his shoes shined is named George and he's not listening. They are on the sidewalk outside a mall in Philadelphia. By the looks of the people, it could be the 1940's or 50's or maybe 1975 or 1980. There is a wide area to walk with lots of chairs. It's 10:00 in the morning on a Saturday. It isn't sunny out because there are no shadows. George is nervous smoking his pipe because he is thinking about his business and he might lose it. He is worried and frowning.
Mac and George have never met before, but they look comfortable with each other. George or maybe we should call him "Smokey" looks nonchalant and Mac looks like it's an easy conversation, like he knows him really well. The two trash bags behind George's chair belong to the store or they could be full of returnables that Mac collects. Mac likes his business at the mall because there are so many people. It is always loud and busy. George will go back to work or home when he's done. He came to have his shoes shined before his business trip. He's taking a train to New York City to save his business. Mac will shine shoes until the mall closes. He's wearing a heavy jacket to keep warm. He charges $10 because he's in the business district.
When the mall closes, he will go home to his wife and two children. Maybe George will come back and have his shoes shined again.
