SmallSmell
Sun., 4 Dec 2016, 3:00-5:00P EST
There was a dry spell. In summer days of old when it got unbearably hot, humid, and sticky in Palm Beach, Florida, people in the neighborhood stood out in their pants, shorts, T-shirts, bare-chested, and/or bare feet, waiting for the city to come and turn on the hydrant. When city worker did, the water shot up high and fell like rain.
Families, friends, neighbors─they all were one people under a rain coming from the hydrant. The HOT on their bodies and minds was cooling down. People took out their cameras.
People felt happy because the HOT changed to COOL. They loved the sudden feel-like weather change. It wasn’t rain from the sky but still water pouring down on sidewalks and street, The sound was the tish-tish-tish of waterdrops splashing on people, palm trees, and ground. The scent of water smallsmell on cooling cement in the air. It was rain in the pictures they took.
People had fun. They took pictures of each other to capture their moments, lives rebounded after a HOT spell. Some people just stood in the rain. They looked up to the sky as if praying or wishing, possibly for real rain! But the best thing after this rain, the people said, “Go home and relax, eat, and sleep.”
