Snow Skiing
That’s a lovely picture. “I’ve seen that picture before,” says Val. Crissie wonders why the dog has a very small lead.
It was snowing earlier, so now we can use the skis. The man has skied before—you wouldn’t feel comfortable on skis if it were the first time. The man is wearing long trousers. Maria thinks he is fashionable!
The pants are tied at the bottom to stop the snow getting in. There’s a man bending over in the background. Stanley is worried that someone will kick him in the backside!
The man on the skis is called Mimi Casanova and the dog is called Pikkabella. The man is wearing a hat to protect his eyes from the sun and to protect him if it snows.
Mimi Casanova is very happy with his dog. He’s had the dog for many years, but the dog doesn’t look old. He has to be very strong to walk in the snow. His paws sink into the snow—it’s not a sturdy surface. It’s very soft.
The weather is half across. Elsie thinks it is very quiet because of the snow, but Val can hear a hairdryer. Mimi Casanova says: “Come and see me”.
Elsie thinks the figure bending over in the background looks like a mushroom. Stanley says: “That’s not a mushroom. It’s just a man bending down to adjust his skis!” The black mushroom is called Hans—a German name.
Mimi Casanova is wearing the usual garb they wear in the mountains. The dog Piccabella is a blue collie. The man’s legs and feet are warm and there is nothing in the way to stop him from skiing. The sticks, or ski poles (there are two of them) help him balance.
Elsie thinks the dog doesn’t belong to Mimi Casanova, he has just came for a pat. He could belong to someone else. The man is going to take off on his skis and the dog will follow him.
There are trees coming up through the snow. It’s not happening in Australia. It could be in America or in Canada. It’s in Canada, in Montreal!
Piccabella has white under his chin and white on his chest. Nobody has thought to put something over the dog’s paws. His paws must be cold. Crissie thinks that God has made this type of dog to be able to survive in the snow. Maria suggests that the puppy should wear a scarf!
Stanley says “he’s a four-legged dog but he only uses two legs at a time!” Maria thinks the dog has one leg that looks crooked. “Poor thing,” she says! But Crissie reassures us that there is nothing wrong with the dog.
