Told by John, Janet, Pat, Betty, Donna, and Jack.
It reminds me of the last day of school. Kids are so anxious to get out of class and jump into the water. They have to be silly on the last day of school. I think this is lake Michigan. It's a beach day, and its is sunny and warm. The little boy's name is Sam, and he is going to dive in pretty soon! His best friend Billy is already in the water, he just dove in. They swam all the way to the beach with a bunch of other kids. Everyone knows it is not safe to swim alone. The lake smells fishy, and there is a concession stand on the beach. After swimming all the kids are going to build a sand castle together, and take turns burying each other with sand because that is what you do with your first day of summer vacation! Sam has a lot of energy to burn, and they are going to play the rest of the day. They will play games, and tease each other. Afterward they are going to go get a bite to eat, maybe some candy and soda. They can't go swimming after, they need to take some time to relax before they swim home. Sam has a lot of friends, and at home they usually play video games. But the first day of summer vacation is special, so they build motes around their sand castles and fill them with water. Billy's sister Mary desperately wants to join them at the beach, even though she knows they will tease her. Every time they go to the beach together he splashes water into her face. She tells mom hoping Sam will get a time out. Mom tells them both to take a break from all the fun, and to take a nap. When they tell dad, he always sides with Mary because Sam and his friends always pull her hair. Mary is the youngest so she gets away with everything, so she takes away Sam's GI Joe and hides it on him as payback. Dad makes the two hug each other and make up, not knowing Mary plans to buried GI Joe at the beach the next day! They have all summer for sleep-overs and campfires with ghost stories, but today they are enjoying summertime at the beach!
