This is on a farm in rural central Pennsylvania. It is summertime. A young girl, Susie, the daughter of a farmer and his wife, is holding a little baby chick in her apron. Susie is hiding around the barn door. She just wants to hold the chick. She's afraid that the mother hen, Molly, will see that she has her chick and that she might flock her. Molly is hunting for her baby chick that is gone. There are smells of lots of straw and chicken dung. Corn kernels for feed are scattered all around. Molly, the mother hen, goes "cluck, cluck, cluck." The baby chick goes "peep, peep, peep." Susie puts the baby chick back down in the barn when Molly, the mother hen, has walked away. Molly runs over to where her baby is and lies down to keep the baby chick warm. Susie hurries home before Molly sees her!
