The Absent Fellow
“Don’t mess with her” says Doris
She looks determined.
The year is 1892 or 1902 or the 1800s
Her boots look like leather to protect her
She might be climbing a spider web
Her name is Charlotte, Charlie for short.
Her name reminds Florence of “Charlotte Russe”
A creamy cake that must be kept cool
She won’t be able to fit many groceries in her plane
She climbs in carefully--she’s skinny so it’s easy for her
She’s confident and she knows what she’s doing
She’s wearing tough boots and a skirt
When she bends down you can see her bum! Says Kathy
She’s going to visit Kathy in Liverpool
There’s a screen to protect her in the plane
To keep the flies from hitting her teeth
She’s defying her father, who was also a pilot
He taught her to fly, but said she could only fly this once.
“Hallelujah!” he said,
“After this flight, you’ll be a Lady again
And you won’t show your bum anymore”
We hear the sputtering of the propeller
Going “doodoodoodoodoodoodoo”
She’s flying from Manchester or Yorkshire
If she crashed she would hit a lot of people
She is secretly flying to her lover
The weather looks perfect for flying
But there may be a storm ahead
She looks like she can cope with anything they throw at her, says Carol
But she’s definitely going to get flies
In her teeth and her goggles
Her heart is beating fast!
“I’m going to do it” she thinks
She feels a little horrible
About betraying her father
But the crowd is there to cheer her on
Maybe she’ll never return
And her father will lose his daughter and his plane
The plot is thickening! Says Carol
This could be the start of something BIG
