Molly is watching her pet duck, “Ray” who is sunning himself in the doorway of the old barn in Waxhaw. It’s a beautiful hot, sunny day and Molly is drying the clothes on the line near the barn. Molly’s dad Elmer is bringing in hay from the pasture to make fresh beds for the barn animals. In the barnyard can be heard the boisterous sounds of, “Quack, Quack”, “Neigh, Neigh”, Ruff, Ruff”, and “Moo, Moo.” Molly is talking to herself and saying; “I have to dry these clothes again? I wish somebody would come and play with me.” “I’d like to play a game of tag and hide & go seek.” Molly’s mom Matilda is making corn and yeast bread, baked beans, mashed potatoes, with fresh garden tomatoes and delicious fried chicken for the birthday picnic. It’s Molly’s sister Edith’s birthday today. They have invited 4 of Edith’s friend’s from school. Some of the guests will walk to the farm while others will ride in cars. Matilda is making a chocolate birthday cake with white cream cheese frosting.. yum, yum!
Edith is hoping it doesn’t rain because she’s turning 14 today. She makes a wish as she blows out the candles that her boyfriend will come home from Europe. Edith opens present's beautifully wrapped in heart covered paper. She is happy to get perfume, stockings, a purple bike and a box of books. She really enjoys reading love stories. As each guest leaves they wish Edith another “Happy Birthday!"
