Story by various residents participating in “Seniors on Stage” Program at Cornell Hall Rehabilitation Center, Union NJ
Facilitated and recorded by Lillian Ribeiro
This is Margaret. Margaret might be on a horse or a motorcycle. Looks like a motorcycle. It has valves. Margaret is strong at something. She looks scared. She’s looking at a car. She’s wondering if she can make it across before it comes. She thinks she knows someone in the car. It’s a cop. He knows her boyfriend. They don’t get along because he doesn’t get a long with anyone. They’re at Cooney Island. Her shirt has big polka dots. She’s got goggles, and a golden helmet. Margaret rides horses and teaches. She teaches children to ride horses. She looks angry and apprehensive. She has no license. She thinks she’s going to be in a lot of trouble. She pleads with the cop not to arrest her. So she says, “I thought my boyfriend had the license to drive”. “I’m giving you a warning. Make sure you have your license.” Margret gets scared. She needs help. She needs to get her license and her boyfriend must have the deed (if he cares about her). There is a horn sound. The patrol car comes and now she’s in trouble. Her parents help. They don’t want her to go to jail. The horns are blowing on the street. There are gas smells of the cars' carburetors. The cop pulls up and she gives him a story and she tells him the boyfriend has the deed. The cops says, “I’ll take you to your boyfriend’s and you can get the deed. And I won’t arrest you.”
He arrests her to make sure that what she is talking about is true. She feels sad. She pleads to let her go. “Please officer I won’t do it anymore. Let me go.”
The officer says, “You're gonna go to court and find this out.” He looks angry and like he doesn’t believe her. Margret’s got tears in her eyes. It’s the first time she got arrested.
There’s court and a sate. And a lawyer. The boyfriend becomes her ex-boyfriend. He set her up.
The cop questions the boyfriend and gets the truth out of him. Charlie Brown, the boyfriend, breaks down. And the cop believes him and let’s him go, and lets her go too.
