This is in Canada, built 150 years ago. This is a lighthouse to warn ships that land is near. There is an introvert living here. He is happy that he can be employed, but still have time on his own. Julia would like to live there. The light-house keeper is an old man, with a big beard. He seems mean and people think that about him, but he’s not. They just think that because he is an introvert and likes being away from people. Also living there is his pet falcon. The old man who takes care of the lighthouse is named Ernie Swingle, and his pet falcon is named Shak. Julia thinks Ernie does have friends, who are fellow falconers. They communicate through messages that are delivered by their pet falcons, who fly between them. When they deliver the messages, the person who receives the message gives then a treat, so they like delivering messages. It is positive reinforcement for them to receive a treat for delivering a message. Ernie’s friends are all island dwellers or other lighthouse keepers. They live on nearby islands. In the lighthouse, you can smell the salty sea air. You can hear the cries of the falcons and the woosh of the waves. The sea and sky look calm in this picture, but sometimes it is stormy and you can hear thunder, lightening and rain, and waves crashing. Ernie also likes to smoke cigarettes that he hand-rolls himself, and he writes poetry for fun. He dreams of one day having a book of his poems published.
