The Penguins That Were
Wow! What is going on in this picture? This is a story about two animals holding hands (Nancy). They are a male and female (Herb). They might be getting married (Nancy). They are in love (Marge). Where do you want to say this takes place? They live in Antarctica (Nancy). Where were they before this? They have been swimming in the sea (Nancy). How do you think they feel? They are very cold (Vivian). They are standing on ice (Jim). What do they hear? They hear water splashing [everyone made water splashing sounds]. What do they see? In the distance they see a polar bear on the ice (Jim). The polar bear makes a growling sound [Nancy and she “growled”]. [Then everyone to put up his or her hands and growled. When asked who would be a great growler, they all pointed to Gorton. I then moved next to Gorton and we “growled” together. He laughed.] What did the penguins do when they saw the polar bear? The animals ran away from the polar bear (Marge). The relationship breaks up because they are not looking at one another (Gorton). Each of the animals runs away.
Special Note: With two members of my AgeQuake Theatre Company, the scene was acted out. Jane and Carl became penguins; swam, looked away from one another, and when I became the polar bear, they ran away. Great fun!
