Story by residents at CareOne Harmony Village in
It’s a dance. A young man is dancing with a middle age woman. A grandmother. Her name is Joanne. Charles is a thoughtful man. He’s the grandson. They may be celebrating the grandmother’s birthday. The grandmother is eighty years old today. She’s happy because her grandson is dancing with her to celebrate her birthday. She’s happy because she’s still alive. She reached eighty. Yeah!
Her family and her friends are singing, “Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday, dear Joanne. Happy birthday to you.” The grandmother blows out her candles and the kids help. The kids are her grandchildren and their having a wonderful party. They are having cake and ice cream. Opening presents. And they love to help and eat. Grandma wishes for another birthday. Grandma is tired. She wants to sleep or sit. She wishes for happiness for her family and good health. She wishes for another celebration. They will eat ice cream and cake, hamburgers and fries, chicken and rice pudding. Grandma might have a highball, or a beer.
Her grandson will say, “Cheers! Here’s to grandma and many more happy years.”
“Thank you!” She thanks everyone for coming. Grandma tells the grandson she’s tired and how happy and proud she is of him and she’ll call him on his birthday. She tells him “You’re one of my favorites.” The grandson says, “Thank you. I knew it all along. I love you.”
