It is an Autumn day in 1950 at Country High School in Molalla, Oregon. Country School is holding the Labor Day race for the track team. It is the race that will determine who represents the school in the state championship. George and Happy are in the lead, far in front of everyone. The crowd is cheering, the runners are huffing and puffing as their feet slap the track ground. It has come down to this final moment as George and Happy fly across the finish line. Who is the winner? The crowd cannot tell, it is now up to Principal Gordon.
Principal Gordon announces that Happy is the winner. Happy will represent Country High School ate the state finals. Happy is thinking, "Ring the bell, Ring the bell!" At last the finish bell rings. it is official!
George wishes he had run just a little faster but he is glad for his pal and team mate, Happy. He will be there cheering for his friend at the state finals.
