This is the Smith family and they are celebrating a holiday with a B-B-Q because there is a flag out. They are grilling burgers and brats. They are all related except the couple sitting on the porch swing, they are courting. You cannot see “granny” as she is inside the house in the upper room with the window curtain slightly open.
Their names are Joe, Mary, Marcus, Christina, Jill, Jack, granny, Sally, Tom Bart, Suzy the doll, and Biscuit the dog. Joe is grilling and saying, “it is almost ready” and “Mary, bring out the buns.” Mary has the plate of buns and says, “it is such a lovely day for a B-B-Q with family.” Marcus is standing in the window and is unsure if he wants to come out without granny. He is waiting for granny. Jill and Jack are playing on the tire swing and everyone is enjoying their laughter. Christina is talking to her doll, Suzy and Biscuit is waiting for Joe to drop some food. Sally and Tom Bart are whispering sweet things to each other. They are hoping and planning for a future together.
The Smith family has lived in this house for some time. The farm has been passed down from generation to generation and now Joe and Mary and their family live here with granny. Joe and Mary hope the farm will stay in the family for generations to come. They hope they will get a fair price for the straw and enough rain for a good crop of corn. They hope the farm equipment holds up for several more years, because they need to save up for a soon to be wedding and their children’s education.
It is finally time to eat, so everyone brings out the rest of the food. They will spread a blanket on the ground and have a family picnic. Marcus helps granny outside with dessert and granny says “grace”.
