The Story of a Childhood
As told to Pam Evers by her friend Claudia, CNA, at Community Care
The loss of my parents and having to stay in foster care. Father died first on 12/13. Mother died 17 months later. It was extremely hard on our family.
Brother was left in charge and he had this girlfriend who had such mind control over him that she turned his older sister against him.
He married his girlfriend. He took me and three other sisters and one brother in their care to Chicago and they got married. They rented a hotel room , the cheapest one on skid row. We stayed in one big room overnight. We all had to sleep in one queen sized bed. Two at the top and two at the bottom. The next morning, they came to the hotel to pick us up and took us to a store to buy us cheap outfits each.
My brother had insurance money from both parents. Thirty-four years old and sister had to be about 35 or 36. He allowed himself to be driven by having that much money and being influenced by this woman who looked like Miss Piggy!
The same morning they took us to her friend’s house. She made eggs, bacon and toast for our breakfast. My egg was over easy with the white part not being done. I wasn’t able to eat it and I got a whooping from my oldest brother.
I wanted for things to be the same as if my mother was still alive. I just couldn’t eat my eggs, so I started crying silently because I didn’t want another whooping from my oldest brother.
We went back to his house so we could be under one roof. To me it was a terrible time and I hated every moment of living in his house. His girlfriend didn’t like me and I didn’t like her niether. I couldn’t stand that woman and and likewise she felt the same about me.
