John, Mary and their girls Peggy and Sue are getting ready for Christmas. They are outside of their house in Iowa, but they have moved around a lot because John is a pilot in the Air Force in WWII. Pretty soon he will go back overseas.
John used to run around with Mary's nephew and he courted Mary - she was an attractive girl. Though Mary went around with a few guys, she married John because he was kind, and more special.
They don't have much money so the decorations are simple. John is not a high ranking soldier. Under the tree is a special ring from John to Mary that he shopped for himself in town at the jewelry store. Mary got him a small leather Bible that he can carry in the war. The girls chose the leather. Both girls will get the dolls Momma bought for them.
In the picture Mary has a gift for her mother and they all go over to Grandma's. They pick up their gifts and go home. Grandma will come over in the morning.
On Christmas morning the kids get up early. They can't wait. They are sneaky and go to the living room to see their dolls. Then they yell, "Mommy, Daddy, look what we got". There are caroles on the radio and the whole family sings along,
Joy to the World the lord iss come, Let earth receive her King. Let heaven and nature sing..."
There are candy canes, nuts, and oranges in the stockings. Dinner is turkey, canned vegetables from the cave and potatoes.
John has to go to war. Mary and Peggy and Sue hate to see him go.Mary leaves the kids with Mrs. Hollyoak and she drives John to the airport. In the car they sing "Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war" and Mary prays that God will take care of John. There are sad moments because not all of his buddies will make it. But they did their job.
