The Woman who Flew to Timbuktu
There once was a woman named Annie who loved adventure. Her father was an inventor and an engineer. When she was young, he tried and tried for years to make a contraption that would allow you to fly around the world in a day or less. One day, Annie was out in the woods near her home when she heard a shout. "EUREKA!" She ran back to her house to see her father out in the barnyard jumping for joy.
"I've done it! This flying machine will take you where you around the world in one day! But I am too scared of heights to fly. Annie, will you test it for me?" her father asked.
"UM. YES I WILL!" exclaimed Annie. This was a serious feat that had to be prepared for. Annie talked and talked about it to her friends and the word spread to the townsfolk. People started giving her donations- food, clothing, money, all the things she might need for a journey around the world. Finally the day came for her to fly around the world. Everyone came. Her family, her school friends, her neighbors, townsfolk, policemen, even the mayor came to watch her take flight. She sat in the drivers seat of the aircraft. Suddenly, fear washed over Annie and she did not know if she could do it. She sat with her hands frozen on the steering wheel and did not move a muscle, and tried to keep herself breathing.
"YOU CAN DO IT, ANNIE" her friend shouted.
"GO ANNIE GO!!" yelled another. Soon the crown started to chant "Go Annie go! Go Annie go!"
Annie turned her head around to see the crowd cheering her on and smiled. She knew with the help of her friends, she could do anything. She pushed her foot on the gas pedal and viola, she took flight. She soared and floated and coasted for a while and then ZOOM! Took off faster than the blink of an eye.
Hours later, the townspeople were just jollily going about their day when they heard a sputter in the sky. They looked up to see a figure spiraling down from the clouds.
"IIINCOOMINGGG!" Shouted Annie. Her aircraft barrel rolled towards the ground and landed with a turbulent crash.
"Are you alright?" Her father worriedly exclaimed as he rushed to her side. Annie slowly stood up from her seat. She did not look the same as before. She was tan, her hair was wild, and she was wearing a beautiful foreign looking gown. "What happened?" Her father asked. Annie just laughed as she stood up.
"Well, I got halfway around the world in this thing until I started to fall asleep. I crashed in Timbuktu! I woke up surrounded by villagers who were amazed at me. They thought I was a goddess. They took me to their village and treated me like a queen! They celebrated me and dressed me with these fine clothes and gave me delicious food. I brought some back with me. I had to sneak away to return, because they didn't want me to go! That was the wildest, fastest, most incredible experience of my life."
The townspeople were amazed. Just as Annie finished speaking, the aircraft burst into flames behind her.
"NO! My life's work!" her father cried. He was old and didn't write down how he had created that super fast aircraft, so it was never built again. After that, Annie was thereafter known as the woman who flew to Timbuktuy.
