Things we’d like to tell Milwaukee
We started out by talking about the 50 anniversary of the open housing marches in Milwaukee. 200 consecutive days. Mary walked in every one of them. She would have been about 26. Vel Phillips, the Milwaukee alderman who was one of the main leaders, is Karen's aunt. Karen would have been about 22. She remembers that it was really an intense time.
Milwaukee is a great place. It's better than it was. It was hard for Mr. Hill to believe Milwaukee was so racist but we were number 5 on the believe it or not scale.
There were more good things going on here and good people. There were jobs. There were strong unions. Then there was Jeffrey Dahmer. That was crazy.
Milwaukee was jumping back in the day. There were night clubs on both sides of Walnut Street. You could go to matinees on Sundays. It used to be one of that best places.
I don't like it anymore. "Get me out of here!"
People aren't friendly. They're killing babies. It's not safe for anyone. Anything goes. If you can survive here you can live anywhere.
Mary won't be here another year. Now the south is good and the north is bad. It used to be the other way. The mayor better get out of town before she does.
The Mayor should be more honest and state the problems. It won't do any good but it's a point of reference. He should at least try to acknowledge things that happen.
The downtown area is nice. Not all of us agree. There aren't any stores. There's nothing. All of the good stores are way on the outskirts of town now.
Mary worked at a formal wear store. Gimbal Schusters is gone. Mr Hill go this suits at Johnny Walkers.
We are mad at Milwaukee and fixin to get out.
But Shirleen says that she got a change to go to school in Milwaukee. She has friends here. When she lost her mother, her sister took care of her. Now she takes care of herself. She can only use her right side. She thinks that she does very well and we all agree. She knows right from wrong and if anybody wants to know anything, she'll tell them "yes" or "no."
Mr. Q has been here 60 years. he said that people are nice. He liked to go to the tavern when you could leave money on the bar and no one would take it. You could go out on the lake and stay all night.
Mary would tell her hometown of St. Louis to clean up. Gangsters hang out there.
Mr. Hill would tell LA that they have it going on. Keep play9ing good basketball. It's a mecca for sports and entertainment.
Cleo will tell Tennessee that she's on her way.
But Mr. Hill says that what we're doing here, sitting around the table and talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly is uplifting. And he wonders what our teen friends from Neu
