It looks like a hot day in the office. His name is Syd. It’s been a hard day at the office. He reminds Julia of her neighbour. He’s off to the pub. He’s thirsty and wants to check on the races. He wants a cold beer. He’s a bookie! He could be a publican. He doesn’t have a family. Joy thinks he is a bachelor. He’s pretty hot and worn out. He’s relieved because he has backed a winner. He’s fanning himself and he’s just won. He’s very elated and happy. Must have been a close finish. Thank goodness he got up at last. He was sweating it out. It helped him across the line. We’d hear “Ohhhh, how lucky am I!” He shouldn’t be betting in the first place!! He’s a naughty boy. Maybe he’ll give it to charity. We don’t think so.
We hear corn flakes, snap, crackle and pop. Someone is calling the races. We hear vitamins B and D!! We smell strawberries, perspiration and beer on his breath. He’s going to fill up again now. There’s no one else around. His wife could walk in. He’s expressing his joy to someone out of the picture! He’s wiping the perspiration off with a towel. He would be confused if his wife walked in. He’s a lad with his straw boater and lairy (Australian informal word for loud) tie. It’s early in the day and it was a night race, the trots on Saturday night. He ends up with a hangover and goes on a holiday with the money he has earned. Perhaps in the Islands! Maybe he’s off to Bali for a holiday or Fiji or America where the highlights are. He’s off to Vegas and he loses it all in the final go. You’d think that would teach him a lesson and serves him right. The gamblers say “Easy come..Easy go!!”
