You Can’t Eat All the Cookies

Well, to grow up is to grow tall—not for everybody, I guess. But for me, I grew tall, long before I grew up. I don’t know if I have grown up. To grow up means to…tooooo…. become a person. To grow up means to become a person while trying to hold on to your humanity. I think it depends on who is defining what being a grown-up is. In a cynical way, being a grown-up means leaving your childlike wonder in exchange for—I dunno—the necessities of surviving and thriving in the world. You gotta play the game. I guess you could say growing up is freedom, but I guess it’s the opposite of that. Does that make any sense? When you’re a kid, you think of growing up as being free—you can have as many cookies as you want, you can stay up past your bedtime. I guess growing up is knowing that you can’t eat all of the cookies. You think you’re going to be more free, but you have a home and schedules, and a job. So I guess growing up is the same as being a kid…just taller.
