Student Feature: Hannah Behling

TimeSlips is excited to introduce and connect you to individuals learning the art of creative aging from many walks of life, different places around the globe and myriad vocations to highlight the breadth of work being done. This week, we are introducing you to Hannah Behling, a graduating senior from UW-Green Bay.

TimeSlips: Where do you go to school, and what is your major?

Hannah: I am a student at UW – Green Bay. I will be getting a BFA in Writing and Applied arts and a BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing.

TimeSlips: How did you find out about TimeSlips?

Hannah: I learned about TimeSlips through my capstone class last semester (fall 2022), we were introduced early on but began our project halfway through the semester.

TimeSlips: What were you hoping to get out of taking Professor Meacham’s class?

Hannah: At first, I was hoping to get my capstone credit out of the way, as a graduating senior I was so focused on getting everything finished that I didn’t mind what I had to do as long as it got done. That quickly changed as I worked alongside my class partner, Travis, and the two women we were partnered with, Cindy and Carla.

TimeSlips: How did your perspective change throughout her course?

Hannah: I was nervous at first, maybe a little frustrated by this project. It wasn’t how I imagined a capstone class being held. It ended up being the most memorable class experience I ever had. Every week I grew closer to each of the women and got to know them in a way I never would have outside of the class. I wish there had been more time to work with them.

TimeSlips: How do you hope to use the skills you gained from TimeSlips after you graduate?

Hannah: I hope to use these skills at the YMCA when I work with older adults and people who have memory issues. It can be easy to ignore and push them away; however, having the skills and ability to hold conversations with people who are isolated is important. When the YMCA reopened after Covid-19, I heard numerous stories from different people about how the YMCA was the only place they were able to interact with people again. The skills I have gained are going to help me in my career at the YMCA.
