SnapShot of the 40’s
Armed robbery turned carnival fair. This is somewhere in the US, most likely Chicago. It is in the 1940's or 1930's. The toes on his shoes will tell you where he is from, black leather shoes with pointy toes which suggest he is from Chicago. Which means that this is actually in the 1920'3. The gernzy drinks are for sale, as well as the holstein cows. You used to be able to get a bottle of coke for only a nickel. A nurse is taking this picture probably; of a father and his son. You can tell its a boy becuase little girls didnt wear outfits like this back in the day. The guys name is Joe or Jim, probably Jim. The dad is holding his little boy. There are seven people in this picture. With Jim you cant really tell how he is feeling, but the kid is happy because he is drinking milk. The little boy is wearing a sailor outfit, or a navy outfit for boys. The dad is quite proud of his son, you can tell because of the way he is holding his son. The cups are paper and the straws are big, they take alot of effort to suck up the milk. The little boys name is Jim Junior, they call him Jimmy, he is named after his dad. The people in the background are workers, they are wrapping all the things in paper. The woman in the front has very clean and tidy shoes on, and I think she is wearing stockings. Her shoes are awesome, they are flat bottom high heels; so she can walk on the grass. I like her hat, it is just like my moms. The usual noises are going on, we can hear a merry go round, and that hammer game where the men hit the bell with a hammer to see who is the strongest. There is a white and black horse off to the right hand side, he has very big feet in order to pull his cart. The bags on the cart are for the horse poop, you can smell the second hand hay (thats horse poop). There is noises from the rides all around. There aremore cups filled with juice and milk ready to be served, the cups are white waxed paper cups. Momma has fancy glasses on that help her with reading or seeing far, she is passed her mid 30's. My grandmom had glasses like her. OH, there is another person there; there is eight people there not the original seven we thought. The 8th person is behind the person standing in the middle, they are high up in the wagon. The longer you look at the photo you realize that the wagon doubles in size. Somebody start the horses up and off to the carnival they go. You cannot read the white writing on the wall; so it must not be that important. One of the ladies here are married; she has a wedding ring on the hand that is sitting on the counter. Her husband is cleaning up the horse poop, someone's got to do it! The tires on the wagon are the brand good year, very reliable tire. The women on the left looks at the man and boy with love; because she is the mom or grandmom. They are drinking milk and coke, but not together because that would be gross. But if you mix pop and ice cream it is good and it is called a float. At the time this picture was taken in moder day, in modern time. Dad, mom, and child are the concumers. The women are the managers, but it is a paternal society because the dads bought the coke and milk. When skirts and dresses were that long and clean it meant they were well off. It appears to be tough times but not for the people out. You could only go out if you could afford it; the rest of the people are working. it was a stable and productive society. This photo is just a wonderful snap shot of time.
